Pick for Britain – Government new Land Army Campaign starting in the next weeks – Aimed to help harvest and prevent crops rotting.
Ministers are looking at ways to help farmers replace tens of thousands of seasonal workers who normally come from Europe promoting pick fruit and vegetables in the “national interest”. They are hoping to have the same effect as the help NHS campaign recently.
We also must understand that the virus has hit hardest in Itay and Spain where we get the majority of these items so unless people come out and pick it maybe become necessary to ration items.
Isn’t the answer simple by increasing the costs of fruit and vegetables so people get paid enough to want to do it and enough to live on? People seem to just want everything to be cheap rather than looking at what is involved in the production and supporting farmers who offer a better standard of living to workers? Buying direct from farmers to cut out the middle man?
I think we forget food is our fuel and we need to see how much we should value it.
