Hyperbaric oxygen therapy was invented in 1662 by a British clergyman and physician named Nathaniel Henshaw. He believed that putting a patient under pressurised conditions would leave to therapeutic benefits to certain conditions of the lungs and even to aid better digestion. He called the chamber a domicilium.
